Anaheim Ducks name Radko Gudas their new captain, following the departure of Ryan Getzlaf after the 2021-22 season

The Anaheim Ducks have named defenseman Radko Gudas as their new captain, the team announced Tuesday.

Gudas, 31, becomes the 14th captain in Ducks franchise history, succeeding Ryan Getzlaf, who held the role for 12 seasons before departing as a free agent in 2022.

The Ducks acquired Gudas in a trade with the Florida Panthers in July 2022, sending a fifth-round pick to Florida in return.

Gudas is a veteran of 10 NHL seasons, having also played for the Philadelphia Flyers and Tampa Bay Lightning.

He has appeared in 564 career games, recording 163 points (34 goals, 129 assists) and 917 penalty minutes.

Gudas is known for his physical play and leadership qualities.

He is expected to play a key role for the Ducks this season, both on and off the ice.

"We are excited to name Radko as our captain," Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek said in a statement.

"He is a proven leader and a respected voice in our locker room."

"We believe he has the qualities necessary to lead our team to success."

Gudas is the first Czech-born captain in Ducks history.

He is also the first defenseman to captain the Ducks since Scott Niedermayer in 2005.

The Ducks are scheduled to open the 2022-23 season on Oct. 13 at home against the Seattle Kraken.
