Early Life and Reign

Charles II was born on May 29, 1630, and ascended to the throne as King of Scotland in 1649, following the execution of his father, Charles I. However, he was overthrown by Oliver Cromwell's Commonwealth in 1651 and spent the next few years in exile.

Restoration and Reign

In 1660, after the downfall of the Commonwealth, Charles II was restored to the throne of England, Scotland, and Ireland. His reign was marked by political intrigue and religious turmoil. He restored the monarchy and the Anglican Church, but also faced significant opposition from factions within Parliament.

Personal Life and Legacy

Charles II was known for his charm and extravagance. He fathered numerous illegitimate children and had a reputation for debauchery. Despite his personal shortcomings, Charles II is remembered as a significant figure in British history, overseeing a period of economic and cultural revival. He died on February 6, 1685, without leaving any legitimate heirs. His brother, James II, succeeded him to the throne.
