Early Life and Education

James David Vance (born August 2, 1984) is an American politician, lawyer, author, and Marine veteran. He has served as the junior United States Senator from Ohio since 2023.

Vance grew up in Middletown, Ohio, and graduated from Middletown High School in 2003. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Ohio State University in 2007 and a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School in 2013.

Military Service and Career

After graduating from law school, Vance joined the United States Marine Corps, where he served as an intelligence officer for two years.

Upon completing his military service, Vance worked as a venture capitalist and entrepreneur. In 2016, he published a bestselling memoir, "Hillbilly Elegy," which chronicled his upbringing and the struggles faced by many working-class Americans.

Political Career

Vance's political career began in 2021 when he announced his candidacy for the United States Senate from Ohio. He ran as a Republican and defeated former state treasurer Josh Mandel in the primary election.

In the general election, Vance faced Democratic candidate Tim Ryan. He won the race by a margin of 64.7% to 35.3% and was sworn into office on January 3, 2023.

Vance is married to Usha Chilukuri, a lawyer and healthcare executive. They have three children.
